The presentation focuses on the linkages between ethnicity and national censuses in the context of nation-building. Using theoretical approaches, historical and contemporary illustrations in a variety of countries, parts of this complex puzzle scrutinized through the prisms of sociology and political science. The examples illustrate the diversity of contexts that connect population, ethnicity, and nation-building, raising new questions and comparative problems. How social and cultural memory is integrated into the process of nation-building will also be considered. The multidisciplinary emphasis addresses core themes of ethnicity, nation-building, and construction of social memory from a local and global perspective.
