Asal Ulmasova: “I love the process of tutoring and learning that is why for me it gives a sense of competency which makes me very happy…”

February 8, 2017

Asal Ulmasova, a junior in the International and Comparative Politics Department, balances her academic and work responsibilities as a student at 鶹ý and a tutor for the Writing and Academic Resources Center. During her time at 鶹ý, she has developed her (and others') professional and academic skills through her work with WARC.

She shared her thoughts about her job:

I am a student with good academic standing. Also, I am a writing tutor at the 鶹ý’s Writing and Academic Resource Center (WARC), which could show that I am responsible and very attentive to combine study and work. When I was a freshman I took a course Composition Theory and Pedagogy that allowed me to apply for WARC. This opportunity gave me a chance both to teach and to learn from my peers. The purpose of tutoring session is to assist a student to become a better and independent writer; however, I have my own goal which is for me to improve my communication skills and to enhance my teaching potential. It is not difficult to combine work and study because WARC is an interesting place to investigate a new knowledge by sharing it within the 鶹ý community and in most of the cases I learn from my tutees, which is very beneficial for me. Usually students are asking to check their papers, whereas it is not the main problem that most of them faces.Tutees ask questions that they hesitate to ask of their professors, questions which are sometimes difficult to answer because, normally, tutors concentrate on the demands of the assignment. When these demands are not clearly understood by the student, we help to clarify the student’s understanding. All in all, I love the process of tutoring and learning that is why for me it gives a sense of competency which makes me very happy.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for WARC director Mariya Antonova and WARC coordinator Paul Drosnes for their trust in me to be a member of this amazing family and for creation of comfortable conditions to have such a great experience in teaching.
